Bukunema from Home: On Watchmen & Graphic Novels

Bukunema is back! During this WFH season, we are going to host this program virtually. Since no movies will be present as those in the past, we will focus on book discussion. The theme for this weekend is Graphic Novels. This literary format has been people’s favorite ever since it came out back in 19th century via Adventures of Obadiah Oldbuck/Histoire de M. Vieux Bois, created by humorist Rodolphe Toffler. Graphic novels develop as technology and creativity evolves. Some of them even made it to the all-time great books by several mainstream medias.

Bukunema from Home: On Watchmen & Graphic Novels
Watchmen, by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons (1987)

We will use Alan Moore’s seminal work Watchmen as a foundation for the discussion. From Watchmen, we will talk about an outlook on the concept of superhero in society and morality (Kantian vs Utilitarianism). Other topics to discuss: graphic novels adapted to films, novels adapted to graphic novels and differences between graphic novels and other similar formats. Both hosts and participants are also going to share reading habits and what we usually expect from literature in general. Feel free to prepare your favorite graphic novels to share. Bukunema is a series of programs created by Jakarta Cinema Club to challenge people to dive deeper into literature and cinema. No matter if you are an avid or casual reader, this program is designed to spread reading culture everywhere.
