The Berlin International Film Festival has unveiled its 2024 program, promising an unforgettable cinematic experience. Key highlights include Lupita Nyong’o serving as Jury President, a lifetime achievement honor for Martin Scorsese, and the world premiere of Small Things Like These. With a wide range of compelling films across genres, Berlinale 2024 is set to become one of the defining moments of the cinematic year.

Berlin International Film Festival,  commonly known as the Berlinale, has unveiled its lineup, promising a rich cinematic experience early in the year. As one of the most respected film festivals in the world, the Berlinale draws both industry professionals and global audiences with a program that spans feature films, documentaries, shorts, and experimental works. Each year it showcases up to 400 films across various sections, with around 300,000 tickets sold to the public and more than 20,000 visitors from over 120 countries attending in person.

This year’s festival is structured into multiple strands, each with its own identity. The Competition remains the most watched segment, highlighting international films that spark conversation and debate. Panorama brings daring work from independent filmmakers with distinctive voices. Generation presents movies for younger audiences, while Forumexplores bold forms of cinematic expression. In addition, Berlinale Shorts offers a platform for ambitious short form storytelling that plays with form and idea.

At the heart of Berlinale 2024 is a distinguished jury led by Lupita Nyong’o, acclaimed for her roles in Black PantherLittle Monsters, and 12 Years a Slave. Alongside Nyong’o are critics, directors, and artists from around the world, tasked with awarding the festival’s top prizes including the Golden Bear for Best Film and various Silver Bear categories. This year also celebrates Martin Scorsese, who will receive the Honorary Golden Bear for lifetime achievement, a tribute to his enduring contributions to film and storytelling.

The festival opened with the world premiere of Small Things Like These, directed by Tim Mielants. The film tells a powerful story set in Ireland about the Magdalene laundries, institutions in which thousands of women were forced into hard labor by church authorities into the late 20th century. A cast that includes Cillian Murphy, Eileen Walsh, Michelle Fairley, and Emily Watson brings depth and humanity to the narrative, setting a reflective tone for the festival’s start.

Berlinale 2024 highlights a diverse range of films competing in The Competition. Among them are titles such as Another End by Piero Messina, Architecton by Victor Kossakovsky, Black Tea by Abderrahmane Sissako, Dahomey by Mati Diop, and A Different Man by Aaron Schimberg. Also featured are films from notable voices like Bruno Dumont, Claire Burger, and Hong Sangsoo. This eclectic selection reflects the festival’s commitment to showcasing global cinema that challenges, provokes, and expands what film can be.

As one of the earliest major festivals of the year, the Berlinale sets a tone for cinema’s creative and cultural direction in 2024. From competition entries and youthful explorations to experimental storytelling and documentary reflection, this edition promises meaningful encounters between film and its audiences.
