Every year, lists arrive with a quiet promise. Not Every year, lists arrive with a quiet promise. Not to define cinema, but to mark where we stood while watching it. In 2025, that act of looking felt especially charged. Films came from everywhere and spoke in many registers: intimate, political, playful, wounded, hopeful. Some arrived with spectacle, others whispered their way into memory. What united them was not scale or prestige, but the way they stayed with us after the lights came back on.

At Jakarta Cinema Club, we have always believed that watching films is only the first step. Talking about them, arguing over them, and sitting with disagreements is where cinema truly lives. This year’s lists reflect that spirit. They come from editors and guest editors with different sensibilities, backgrounds, and emotional entry points. Some respond to structure and form, others to feeling and lived experience. None of them claim authority, only honesty.

Taken together, these lists are less about ranking and more about mapping. They chart what moved us, unsettled us, frustrated us, and kept us curious in 2025. They also show how cinema continues to be a shared language in the middle of a chaotic city (or country?), where watching together still matters.

So, what's your favorite film of 2025?
