The Experience: Rediscovering 1980s Indonesia Through Catatan Si Boy

For this session of The Page Podcast, Christian and Bisma take us on a nostalgic journey through 1980s Indonesia via the iconic film Catatan Si Boy starring Onky Alexander. The Experience is a reflection on memory, place, and how cinema can act as a time machine back to moments that shaped a youth culture.

Nostalgia – /nəˈstældʒə/, /nɑˈstældʒə/[uncountable]a feeling of sadness mixed with pleasure and affection when you think of happy times in the past.

Nostalgia is that peculiar blend of sadness and pleasure we feel when we revisit moments from the past. Cinema, perhaps better than any other medium, has the power to embody that feeling. With a camera, film stock, and a screen, a filmmaker can capture not only images but the sense of a time and place. What we watch becomes intertwined with what we remember, and that alchemy of memory and imagination is central to The Experience.

Catatan Si Boy is a cultural phenomenon of the late 1980s. Born from a beloved radio drama broadcast by Prambors, the film encapsulated the spirit of urban youth in a period of relative optimism. It featured the handsome, morally upright Boy, a wealthy young man whose charisma made him an idol for many young Indonesians. Throughout its sequels, Boy and his friends embodied a lifestyle defined by music, fashion, nightclubs, and freedom from the pressing struggles of survival.

For Christian and Bisma, the film became a lens through which they both look back on growing up in Blok M Jakarta, on the joyful rush of hearing Prambors on the radio, the thrill of watching a first film in a local cinema, and the experiences of youth that feel both intimate and universal.

Catatan Si Boy serves as a cultural archive of a formative era in Indonesia. It reminds us how film can keep memories alive, making past eras feel vivid and accessible long after they have passed. Whether you lived through the 1980s or are discovering it for the first time, the film invites you to imagine that time as something still present in the stories we tell and the films we revisit.
